![]() ![]() Therukoothu is believed to have evolved from early Dravidian performance styles that were the ancestors of other traditional performances such as Kathakali, Yakshagana, Theyyam, Bhuta, and Mudiyettu. Koothu is an informal dance structure, in which performances generally depict scenes from ancient epics such as Ramayana, Mahabharata and Tamil classical epics. A form of folk theatre from Tamil Nadu also known as kattaikkuttu and koothu, therukoothu performances include elements of traditional theatre, song, dance and ritual. The word therukoothu consists of two words theru meaning street and koothu meaning theatre/performance. More precisely Koothu refers to either Terukuttu or Kattaikkuttu.
